With an upbringing marked by inconsistency and navigating the unknowns of the foster care system, two remarkable young women, Madysen and Chainee, exemplify resilience and determination as they navigate the journey of motherhood.

As May marks Foster Care Awareness Month, their stories serve as beacons of hope and inspiration, especially since it coincides with Mother’s Day.

For many foster youth, life is a constant quest to find the light at the end of an unpredictable tunnel, often grappling with circumstances beyond their control. Despite the trials they faced during their formative years, Madysen and Chainee never lost sight of their aspirations for the future. Even as they transitioned out of the foster care system and into motherhood, their unwavering commitment to creating a better life for themselves and their children remained steadfast.

Shortly after exiting the foster care system, Madysen and Chainee embarked on their journeys into motherhood, undeterred by the challenges they faced. While pregnant, Chainee married her longtime boyfriend, Stefan, celebrating six years of marriage recently. Meanwhile, Madysen, balancing work and full-time college, discovered she was expecting twins.

Despite the demands of motherhood and their hectic schedules, Madysen and Chainee graciously shared insights into their experiences. Their shared mantra, “push through,” encapsulates their resilience in overcoming adversity, a guiding principle that has sustained them through various seasons of life.

Madysen, now 22, juggles the responsibilities of being a single mother of twins while pursuing her education. Her days are a whirlwind of child care, school, work, and self-care, all driven by her determination to provide a loving and stable upbringing for her children.

Reflecting on her own difficult childhood, Madysen is committed to breaking the cycle, ensuring her children grow up knowing they are loved, cherished, and supported. Madysen shared, “I didn’t have a good childhood, so I like to tell people that I do the opposite of what I was shown as a child in parenting. I just want my kids to have a better life than I did. I want them to grow up knowing they are loved and always taken care of.”

For Madysen, building a strong support network has been instrumental in navigating the challenges of motherhood. From family and friends to seeking advice and sharing struggles, she emphasizes the importance of communication and seeking help when needed. Madysen admits, “Being a single mother is hard, especially a young mom who’s still trying to figure out her own life. One (piece of) advice I would give to other young moms is to push through. Eventually, it will get better, and remember, you have someone (your child) who is always proud of you and looks up to you.”

Similarly, Chainee, a devoted mother of two girls, prioritizes instilling values of love, faith, and resilience in her children. “I want to make sure my girls know they are loved, that they love Jesus, and know they can do anything they put their minds to, no matter what roadblocks may be in the way,” Chainee shared.

Asking Chainee for her insights on navigating the challenges of motherhood, she shared a message of reassurance and resilience. “It’s alright to be scared and overwhelmed,” she expressed empathetically. “It will get easier one day, but for now, you have to push through.”

Chainee's words resonate with the honesty of someone who has faced adversity and emerged stronger. Her approach to overcoming obstacles is characterized by a steadfast determination to persevere and her trust in God. She exemplifies the importance of resilience in the face of adversity, embodying the spirit of pushing through despite the uncertainties that may arise.

Chainee’s days are a balancing act of work, child care, and maintaining a nurturing home environment, where just taking a shower is a time for self-care. Drawing from her own experiences, Chainee emphasizes the importance of open communication and understanding in parenting, ensuring her daughters feel loved and supported.

As they look to the future, both Madysen and Chainee aspire to provide their children with a childhood filled with love, joy, and opportunity. Madysen, newly graduated with an associate degree in radiology, eagerly anticipates starting a full-time job and moving into a new home with her twins. Meanwhile, Chainee dreams of homeschooling her daughters in the years to come, fostering a nurturing environment where they can flourish and thrive.

In the face of adversity, Madysen and Chainee exemplify the transformative power of resilience and determination. Their stories serve as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the enduring bond between mother and child, inspiring others to persevere and embrace the journey ahead.
