An argument over a stolen vehicle led to a shooting and crash at a Springfield intersection on Monday.

Officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to a crash at Cherokee and Fremont streets and arrested two people in the aftermath.

The chain of events started as a dispute over a stolen car, police said. A blue Mustang was stolen from a residence on East Walnut Street. The owner of the Mustang was alerted to the theft, and chased the Mustang in another vehicle.

As the chase wound through neighborhoods, the owner of the Mustang allegedly fired a gun at the person driving his car. It ended when the person driving the stolen Mustang rear-ended another vehicle, Springfield police say.

The driver of the Mustang was arrested on suspicion of tampering with a motor vehicle, and the owner of the Mustang was arrested for unlawful use of a weapon, police said. Charges have not yet been filed by the Greene County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, and so the parties involved in the car chase and shooting have not been identified by police.
