An early morning shooting turned into a double homicide, with one victim dying at the scene and the other dying later at a hospital, the Springfield Police Department (SPD) said.

At 3:12 a.m. July 5, police officers responded to the area of West Chestnut Street and North Kansas Expressway to a report of two people shot, according to a statement the police department issued July 5. Officers found Jack Osborn, 46, with a gunshot wound at 1634 W. Chestnut St.

Osborn died on scene.

Melissa Evans, 44, also had gunshot wounds outside of the residence, according to police. Evans was transported to a Springfield hospital, where she later died.

Police are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting, and there is no suspect information available to the public at this time, according to the release. The double homicide marks Springfield's fifth homicide investigation in 2024.
