Springfield's nonprofit gathering place and support center for LGTBQ+ community members is now set up to be a gallery space for artists.
With donations from this February’s annual queer artist showcase, the Glo members were able to install a railing system to hang art within the Glo Center, located on C-Street.
This Saturday, July 16, is the first gallery open house the Glo Center has ever hosted. Open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with no admission fees, anyone can see the six featured artists and enjoy coffee and light refreshments. The displayed pieces will also be available for purchase, but that is not the goal of the event.
“I think it’s important for queer art to be showcased so it can be celebrated,” Glo Center Co–president Megan Block said. “Not that any one entity does a poor job showcasing, but it is important have a queer space.”
The Glo Center will be hosting free, quarterly open houses and showing different local artists with each viewing in hopes to “expand the accessibility of art,” according to Block.
After their first showcase, volunteer Dan Fergison will install another set of rails to expand the gallery. This gallery is not only meant to benefit viewers but also artists.
“It helps them sell their art in a place that is comfortable and supportive without gallery fees,” Block said.
The Glo Center is at 518 E. Commercial Street in Springfield.
