Weekend reads: getaways close to Springfield and other things to do

The weather this weekend is supposed to be gorgeous — 70s and mostly sunny on Saturday. We're in that stretch of October when all locals rush to cram outdoor fun in before the real cold settles on our doorsteps. (I don't want to alarm you, but forecasts are showing lows in the 20s next week!)

As a result, several of our reporters pitched stories about maximizing these autumn days. Juliana Goodwin, a writer after my own heart, shares a first-person essay on her two favorite wineries in the Lake of the Ozarks — and why it's lovely to visit them in the fall. There's plenty in this story to plan a weekend getaway.

Speaking of getaways... Sony Hocklander has penned a new in-depth hiking guide, whisking readers on an adventure to Pedestal Rocks. Here, striking fall colors and otherworldly rock formations make for a perfect seasonal trek. There's so much to see that Sony recommends a weekend trip to take it all in.
