OPINION |

by Kathleen Murnan, Springfield

As a retired social science teacher, I am concerned about Eric Schmitt's promises. As a candidate for the U.S. Senate, he is promising things that he cannot deliver.

Two of those issues [featured in a recent TV ad] are term limits for the U.S. Congress and a balanced budget. Both of those issues would require constitutional amendments. There is neither the time nor the public will to focus on those issues. Along with the balanced budget, he proposes taking away the pay of elected members of Congress that disagree with a balanced budget. A new Senator does not have the influence to get any of this enacted.

Before Nov. 8, he should take another look at the Constitution to see what the duties of a Senator are.
