Text from our SGF Sunday email newsletter, written by Reporter Rance Burger
Our most-read stories of the week are very, very different. Meteorologist Drew Albert’s column about derechos — storms producing straight line winds with highly destructive force — clocked in at No. 1 on the chart. There’s a good chance most Missourians have lived through at least one derecho in their lifetime, but now you know what to watch for and what to call the storm when it happens.
Springfieldians also proved to be very interested in issues of student discipline across Springfield Public Schools. First, we looked at Cory Matteson’s report on a discussion by the Springfield Board of Education, and then we dove into his coverage of the superintendent’s 15-point plan to address discipline. We learn what a “Take 10” card is at Reed Academy.
In sports, NASCAR celebrates its 75th anniversary by naming the 75 greatest drivers of all time. How fitting is that a Springfield legend — old No. 75 himself — Larry Phillips made the list. Motorsports hall-of-fame journalist Lyndal Scranton filed this column on the five-time national champion.
In our Lives Remembered feature, Mike O’Brien introduces us to Loy Swanson, who lived a full life with music prevalent at work, at home and on Sundays, and who was an avid water skier in spite of the fact that she never, ever got her hair wet.
Enjoy what remains of the weekend. Jeff Kessinger is back in your inboxes Monday morning with the start of “Living in Fear,” an investigative series on domestic violence in Greene County by Jackie Rehwald and Steve Pokin.
