Fast food fans in northeastern Springfield will gain a new choice over the holiday weekend.
Whataburger will open a new Springfield location at 11 a.m. on Monday. The new store, at 2355 N. Glenstone Ave., will open with only drive-thru service on a 24/7 basis, according to a press release from the company. Inside dining, curbside and online ordering will be offered in a few weeks.
Operators plan to hire up to 100 new people for shifts at the new restaurant, according to the release. Sean Tamez has been named as the opening partner.
“As we grow in this great city, our Whataburger family is thrilled to continue serving our loyal customers while welcoming new fans,” Tamez said in a press release.
The franchise also plans to continue partnerships with Springfield Parks and Recreation, Boys and Girls Club of Springfield, Missouri State University and the Springfield Cardinals, according to the release.
The Glenstone restaurant will be the chain’s fourth in the Springfield metro area. The other three, located at 3880 W. Sunshine St., 1851 W. Marler Lane in Ozark and 1371 U.S. Highway 60 in Republic, have opened their dining rooms to the public. A fifth location has been planned for 401 N. Eastgate Ave.; the company also plans to open a location in Joplin.
Whataburger won’t be alone at that intersection for long. Chick-fil-A plans to open a new restaurant at the southwest corner of Glenstone and Kearney in the first part of 2024, according to a statement from the company.
When completed, it will mark Chick-fil-A’s fifth Springfield location, and its northern-most restaurant. The company has restaurants at 425 W. Sunshine St. and 3700 S. Glenstone Ave., as well as inside the Battlefield Mall and Missouri State University's Plaster Student Union.
The two restaurants at the Glenstone and Kearney intersection will be positioned to attract traffic from an I-44 interchange less than a mile away.
