This Memorial Day weekend, we encourage all of our readers to remember the lives of those who died in the line of duty in service to the United States of America. One of the best ways to recognize the impact those who serve have on our nation is to visit a cemetery sometime over the holiday weekend. Photographer Jym Wilson met some volunteers who spruced up the graves at Springfield National Cemetery ahead of the holiday weekend, and what he saw should move you.

Elizabeth Trader, of Springfield, hands her 18-month-old daughter Natalie a flag while she and her husband, Doug, not pictured, volunteer at Springfield National Cemetery Thursday night, May 25, 2023. Both husband and wife have multiple family members who have served in the military. “We want to do this with her very year,” Elizabeth said. “She needs to know the incredible sacrifice of people we will never know.“ (Photo by Jym Wilson)

A three-day weekend is all about balance, and for many of us, that’s balancing what to eat as we head to the lake, the river or the camp site. Meal preparations can turn what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend into a stress fest in a hurry. That’s why food writer Juliana Goodwin scoured Springfield for some of the best grab-and-go food options to be found. Give her story a read before you head out this afternoon, and your palette will thank you later.

If a Springfield Cardinals — err, Springfield Cashew Chickens game is part of your weekend plan, you’ll be partaking in America’s pastime inside the municipally-owned Hammons Field. It sold to the City of Springfield for about $12 million this spring, and the city government set aside another $4 million for some upgrades required by Major League Baseball. Cory Matteson explains how a $4 million line item in a Missouri house bill might offset the costs of those upgrades with state government funds.
