Text from our SGF Sunday email newsletter, written by Reporter Rance Burger

Our most-read story of the week was reporter Jackie Rehwald’s firsthand account of the chilling stare a defendant gave in a Springfield courtroom moments before he was sentenced to prison time for domestic assault. It’s part of the Daily Citizen’s four-part investigative series, “Living in Fear,” an examination of domestic violence in Springfield and Greene County. Part 2, Obstacles to Leaving is fully available on our website, and it is as breathtaking as it is revealing.

The pending return of a Spoonhour to the sidelines at Missouri State basketball games also drew a huge crowd. Lyndal Scranton had the scoop on Jay Spoonhour, whose hiring to coach Dana Ford’s staff is likely to be announced in the coming days. The younger Spoon is the son of a Missouri State legend, and the thought of Jay Spoonhour moving to Springfield with his wife and family likely stirred up some nostalgic feelings for Bears basketball fans.

The Springfield Cashew Chickens — yes, the Cashew Chickens — play tonight at 6:05 p.m. It’s been a nutty weekend for the Springfield Cardinals, who temporarily rebranded in salute to a culinary dish synonymous with Springfield. Lyndal Scranton takes this saucy look at the Cardinals’ alter ego, including reactions from the Cashew Chickens players themselves. Scranton even suggests some new identities the ballclub could assume.

Enjoy the rest of the long weekend. Jeff Kessinger is back in your inboxes Tuesday morning.
