Efforts to clean up a Springfield-area waterway will look different today. The James River Basin Partnership River Rescue moved from the Finley River to the James River because of low water levels. Plus, Cory Matteson tells us there won’t be a large Dumpster just for scrap metal, and that’s a good thing. Still, if your plans for the day include visits to a couple of popular river access spots in Christian County, be prepared to encounter a flotilla-sized cleanup effort and some people hauling out trash.

The Gary Sinise Foundation invited people to former Springfield police officer Mark Priebe’s new home outside of Republic. The star of the day was not Sinise, an award-winning movie actor, but Priebe, who spoke with columnist Steve Pokin about the challenges he and his family have faced since he was paralyzed in the line of duty in 2020.

Pridefest happens today in downtown Springfield with the parade at 11:15 a.m. and events starting at noon at Park Central Square. For the first time, the Springfield City Council officially recognizes June as Pride Month. In case you missed it, check out Jack McGee’s story on the debate, vote and efforts that led to this moment for the LGBTQ community. It involves the 2021 formation of the Mayor’s Committee on Equity and Inclusion, and a recent push from Springfield’s LGBTQ activists.
