Gailey’s Breakfast Café shakes up at First Friday Art Walk in October. You can dine and see some art while you’re there, and — if you’re really feeling bold — sing a little karaoke.

Gailey’s (220 E. Walnut St.) is one of 19 venues open for Art Walk, a monthly effort in which galleries and businesses line up arts-related events across downtown Springfield. Everyone is encouraged to walk around the neighborhood and pop into galleries in what organizers call a “self-guided tour.” Venues will be open for variable hours between 5 and 10 p.m.

Get an early start on your walk at Gailey's

Things will get going a little earlier at Gailey’s, with a show running from 4:30-7 p.m. for First Friday Art Walk. Carol Snyder is the featured artist. She worked at radio station KMET in Los Angeles, serving as staff photographer and doing voiceover work, before moving to Missouri. She says she awakened her creative urge at art classes at the Springfield Art Museum and at Missouri State University.

Snyder also drew inspiration from her 16 years as a volunteer for the Missouri Department of Conservation.

“There, I discovered a passion for painting: birds, landscapes and now abstracting all of those things,” Snyder said in a press release. “I inhale inspiration from observing nature, which surrounds me.”

Snyder’s work has been displayed around Springfield, including at Bambinos Cafe, Finley River Fine Art Gallery, Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts, Springfield-Branson Regional Airport, Springfield Conservation Nature Center, Springfield Regional Arts Council and Walnut Inn Bed and Breakfast.

Karaoke gets underway at 6:30 p.m., hosted by DJ Mason on the Beat from Springfield radio station 92.9 The Beat. A full bar will be available while you enjoy the performances.

Hear spooky stories from other countries

The Jim D. Morris Center (301 S. Jefferson Ave.) is home to Missouri State University’s International Programs and a common stop on First Friday Art Walk. This month, international students from the school will help you get in the fall spirit.

MSU students will showcase their favorite fall activities and spooky stories from their home countries starting at 5:30 p.m. Guests are invited to come and go as they please.

Catch the Art Walk debut of Alleyscapes

The alleyway behind Hotel Vandivort and the Landers Theatre will come alive at sunset thanks to Alleyscapes, the newest installation from Sculpture Walk Springfield.

This partnership with the Hatch Foundation features video art pieces projected onto the parking garage wall in what is referred to as the “Backstage Alley,” accessible via Robberson Alley. Pitt Technology Group and Hotel Vandivort have also contributed to Alleyscapes. New pieces will debut at each First Friday Art Walk.
