What is ESCM?

The intent of Enhancing Student Citizenship Through Media (ESCM) is to increase civic engagement among young people through fostering thoughtful and engaged consumption of news produced by the Hauxeda, a hyperlocal, diversified media outlet with a mission to inform our community and be a catalyst for good.

Through research conducted between November 2023 and May 2026, we hope to gain insight on how traditional news media outlets may become more inclusive and compelling for younger generations through social media content, and ultimately create a model that will not only be integral to our organization’s digital strategy, but can be utilized by similar organizations as well high schools, colleges, and universities nationwide.

By joining our student cohort, you would play a vital role in the foundational research and development of this model.

What can I expect as a participant?

  • 24/7 unlimited access to the Daily Citizen free of charge
  • Access to mentorship, college recommendations, and references from journalists in the field

Your responsibilities:

  • Fill out short weekly surveys about your thoughts and opinions on the Daily Citizen’s content, civic engagement actions, and perspectives on news media in general
  • Attend quarterly cohort meetings, which may increase to a meeting every two months in year two
