The Greene County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death of a jail inmate two days after he allegedly fell from a bunk bed.

Austin S.M. Bond, 32, died Nov. 12. He was in the Springfield jail when he reportedly fell from a bunk to the floor of a jail cell on Nov. 10, at 9:42 a.m. According to a statement the sheriff’s office issued on social media platforms, Bond’s cellmate alerted jailers, who then alerted medical officers in the jail.

Bond was taken by ambulance to a Springfield hospital, where he died. He reportedly suffered a severe head injury in the fall. Bond’s death is under investigation, and his body will undergo an autopsy by the Greene County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Bond had been in jail for two months at the time of his death. He was awaiting court appearances in two cases.

Court records show Bond was arrested and charged with third-degree domestic assault, a felony, along with misdemeanor charges of kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child, fourth-degree domestic assault and resisting arrest. He was being held on a $50,000 bond.

On Oct. 23, Bond was served with charges for second-degree assault, first-degree property damage and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child. The charges were filed in connection to an incident May 1, 2023, in which Bond allegedly had a dispute with an acquaintance over money that ended with Bond using a vehicle to strike the other person’s vehicle.

Court records show Bond’s  defense attorney attempted to have the bond amount reduced on Oct. 25. After a court reduction hearing on Oct. 27, a Greene County judge denied attorney Stuart Huffman’s motion for a bond reduction for Bond.
