A Springfield police spokesperson confirmed an arrest has been made in connection to the Tuesday night shooting death of Chaviz Nguyen in downtown Springfield.
At 4:51 p.m. Nov. 16, police announced charges have been filed against Elysha Bedell, 19, and two juveniles, whose cases have been referred to juvenile court. Bedell was booked in the Greene County Jail in Springfield at 10:30 p.m. Nov. 15, according to online jail records.
According to the Springfield Police Department, Bedell will be charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action, and will be held in jail without bond.
UPDATE: Charging documents, namely a probable cause statement filed by Springfield police, offer some details of what transpired and led to three arrests.
According to previous Daily Citizen reporting, officers with the Springfield Police Department responded at 8:18 p.m. Tuesday to a report of gunshots fired from vehicles at Grant Avenue and College Street. The police located a vehicle driven by Nguyen, 26, of Springfield. Nguyen and an unidentified female passenger had been wounded by gunshots.
Nguyen — the son of Chea and Ratamak Nguyen, who own the downtown restaurant Lucky Time — died at the scene. The woman was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The shooter fled the scene in their vehicle immediately after the shooting.
This is SPD’s 17th homicide investigation of 2023.
