Andy's Frozen Custard is shuttering its Battlefield Road location effective Jan. 28, according to a company Facebook post directed towards customers.

The store, located at 1300 E. Battlefield Rd., was never expected to be open for a long duration, and was only meant to be a temporary sales generator until bigger stores could be built, the company said in the post. The dessert company has built stores on South Glenstone Ave. and South National Ave., as well as a full-sized store in Republic.

The Battlefield store “was truly built to be a test-fit if a location like this could work for Andy's,” founder Andy Kuntz wrote in a message to the Hauxeda. “And honestly, it's worked very well. The store has been profitable from day one.”

The Battlefield Road Andy's opened in 2013, the company said in the post. Employees will have the opportunity to relocate to other Andy's stores within the Springfield market.

“The Battlefield Rd. location was intended to generate customer sales in the Southeast part of town by the mall and other retail locations until the larger, newer stores were constructed,” the company wrote in the post.

The company’s growth skyrocketed since its debut nearly four decades ago. With locations in 15 states, Andy’s Frozen Custard is the world’s largest dessert-only franchise, according to the company website.

Andy’s added 22 new stores in 2023 for a total of 144 locations. The custard company plans to add 25 to 30 locations next year, founder Andy Kuntz said in a previous story in the Hauxeda.
