Investigators believe a botched robbery attempt over marijuana led to a shooting that left two people dead early Thursday in south Springfield.

Trevin Dicks, 21, and Reggie Carey, 19, both from Springfield, died after the shooting that happened just before 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22.

Tarrin Dicks, 19, and Izaiah Crabb, 18, both from Springfield, are charged with second-degree murder for their suspected roles in the shooting deaths. They were arrested and booked into the Greene County Jail.

Shooter says plan was to meet, smoke pot

According to court documents, Springfield police officers responded to a report of gunshots being heard near the intersection of South Campbell Avenue and Walnut Lawn Street. A short time later, an officer observed a white car stopped in the road near that intersection. Three occupants were in the vehicle, identified in a police officer's probable cause statement only as Suspect 1 and Suspect 2 and Witness 1. Three guns were located in that vehicle.

The witness told police he had been contacted by the two suspects, who asked him to meet them at the Rapid Robert's at 3405 S. Campbell Ave. The witness said he did not see, nor was he involved, in the shooting.

Suspect 1 told police he and Tarrin Dicks agreed to meet up over Facebook Messenger. According to court documents, Tarrin Dicks came to Suspect 1’s residence in a gray SUV. The man said he did not notice anyone else in the gray SUV.

The man said Tarrin Dicks drove around for a bit and then stopped at a stop sign. When she stopped, Suspect 1 said two men — Trevin Dicks and Reggie Carey — jumped out from the rear cargo area of the SUV.

Suspect 1 said Trevin Dicks and Carey displayed a rifle and a handgun. Suspect 1 said he struggled with one ofthem over the rifle. Suspect 1, who was also armed with a handgun, pulled out his handgun and fired multiple times into the back passenger area of the SUV.

He said he got out of the vehicle and fled on foot back to his apartment. Suspect 1 saw Suspect 2 come out of his apartment, and the two of them fled on foot. It was at this point, they called Witness 1 and asked to be picked up at Rapid Robert's.

Suspect 1 showed detectives his messages with Tarrin Dicks that indicated they were meeting up with plans to smoke marijuana together.

The botched marijuana robbery

Not long after police spoke to three men in the white vehicle, officers responded to a 911 call from Cox South Hospital, where a gray Nissan Rogue had arrived with two people with gunshot wounds. Trevin Dicks and Reggie Carey died a short time later.

Officers contacted the other vehicle occupants: Tarrin Dicks, Crabb and a juvenile not named in the police report.

At a Springfield police station, Tarrin Dicks allegedly told police officers she was driving Crabb, Trevin Dicks, Carey and a juvenile around in the Nissan Rogue. When she stopped the car at a stop sign, Tarrin Dicks said a man walked up and started shooting inside the vehicle. She claimed to not know who the shooter was and denied having contact with anyone about meeting.

Crabb was also interviewed. Crabb allegedly told police he, Tarrin Dicks, Trevin Dicks, Reggie Carey and a juvenile planned to rob the man identified as Suspect 1 to steal his marijuana. Crabb said he and the juvenile got out of the vehicle near where Tarrin Dicks and Suspect 1 planned to meet and went behind a nearby building to watch for Suspect 1.

Crabb said Tarrin Dicks was supposed to get Suspect 1 into the vehicle and drive around to where Crabb and the juvenile were waiting. Crabb said Trevin Dicks and Carey were going to surprise Suspect 1 in the vehicle and then Crabb and the juvenile would come from outside the vehicle and assist with robbing Suspect 1.

Crabb said they planned to split the marijuana after the robbery.

Crabb and Tarrin Dicks are charged with second-degree murder because of Missouri’s felony murder rule that a person is culpable of murder if they commit a felony or attempt to commit a felony and another person is killed as a result.

According to online court records, Trevin Dicks pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery and first-degree kidnapping in 2019. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison but given a suspended execution of sentence and released in 2020.

Also in 2019, he pleaded guilty to first-degree assault. He was sentenced to 10 years but released on supervised probation after spending 120 days in jail.
