A cold storage company is expanding its footprint in the Springfield Underground with a $57 million investment to enlarge its facilities.

Cold Zone, Inc., a subsidiary of the Erlen Group and a provider of cold storage logistics solutions, will break ground on a new 170,000-square-foot facility June 20, according to a June 17 Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce press release. The state-of-the-art facility, located in Springfield's Partnership Industrial Center West, will have different temperature zones for frozen and cooler products.

The new facility will be built on a 46-acre site, creating capacity in Cold Zone's position in the Springfield Underground, located at 3610 E. Kearney St. in Building 3, according to the release. The cold storage logistics company has the potential to expand its footprint up to 800,000 square feet.

“With the demand for temperature-controlled storage and distribution solutions on the rise, our new facility in Springfield will enable us to better serve our clients while driving innovation in the industry,” John Griesemer, chief executive officer of Erlen Group, said in the the release.

The Erlen Group is a family-owned group of companies, with assets like the Springfield Underground, Cold Zone, the Frisco Building and Lime Light Development, a developer of industrial parks and warehouses in southwest Missouri, according to the company website.
