Forty-nine Greene County businesses will get money to stay afloat and pay their employees as they continue recovering from the economic symptoms of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Greene County Commission announced a fourth round of funding awards for small businesses that applied for relief through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). This round of funding, announced Sept. 20, is $515,455. It brings the total amount of money the Greene County Commission has passed along to 204 small businesses to almost $2.46 million since July 26.
Businesses had to apply for the funding during a six-week application period from April 20-May 31. A nine-member ARPA review committee checked each application and made recommendations to the Greene County Commission for approval or partial approval. Business owners and managers had to provide documentation to support their need for relief in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated public health and safety orders.
“The commission believes that our small businesses are the foundation of our community’s economy,” Presiding Commissioner Bob Dixon said. “They employ our citizens and pay taxes which fund vital services. It made sense to make small business relief a cornerstone of our recovery efforts.”
The funding is geared toward businesses with 50 or fewer employees, with an average of 7.7 employees per company that received money so far.
Greene County received a total of $8 million in small business recovery funding. The commission is evaluating how many more funding announcements will be made in the months to come, “due to the large number of applications this cycle,” according to a statement from the Greene County Commission.
All of the funding Greene County receives from ARPA must be allocated by Dec. 31, 2024, and all money from ARPA must be spent by Dec. 31, 2026, according to the federal law.
