Vital Farms, a Springfield-based ethical food producer known for its varieties of eggs, is using the success of its flagship Springfield plant to expand the company into Indiana.

Vital Farms will open a second egg washing and packing facility in Seymour, Indiana, in 2027, according to a June 26 company press release. The new facility will create more than 150 jobs in and around the southern Indiana town, and is expected to generate more than $350 million in additional revenue, propelling Vital closer to its 2027 target of $1 billion in revenue.

Vital will use its success of its first egg washing and packing facility in Springfield, which opened in 2017 and was expanded in 2022, to expand to Indiana, according to the press release. Egg Central Station Seymour will incorporate environmental goals into operations and will use industry-leading automation for processing equipment.

The company plans to break ground on the Seymore facility by mid-2025 and have the plant operating by mid-2027, according to the release. In its first phase, the new facility will support about 165 family farmers producing pasture-raised eggs. Vital boasts a network of more than 300 family farms.

Vital Farms started in Austin, Texas, in 2007 and is now the leading U.S. brand of pasture-raised eggs by retail dollar sales, according to the release. The company emphasizes the humane treatment of farm animals and sustainable farming practices.

The flagship Springfield egg washing and packing facility, located at 2007 N. Alliance Ave., has won multiple environmental awards, including the 2024 LEED Gold Certification, according to the release. Vital Farms also has a location inside the Springfield Underground. Approximately 24,000 stores across the United States sell products from Vital Farms.
