A basketball event and a wrestling championship are set to bring more than $2 million in economic impact next year and even more in years to come, according to city press releases.
The NXTPRO Hoops Series — a high-profile basketball event that will bring about 100 teams to The Clubhouse and The Fieldhouse in Springfield, and the Strafford Sports Center — will begin on July 5, according to a Springfield Sports Commission press release.
With 95% of teams from out-of-town, the tournament will generate 1,500 room nights at hotels and more than $1 million in economic impact, according to the press release.
Missouri USA Wrestling has selected Springfield for the next three years of its championship events, according to a press release. The first championship will be held in January at the new Wilson Logistics Arena, at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds.
The events through 2026 will bring more than $3 million into the local economy over the next three years, according to the press release.
“Having sporting events in Springfield benefits local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, attractions and retailers,” Mark Hecquet, president of the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau, said in the release.
“It also helps keep the economy strong and creates jobs; 22,000 people in Greene County work in the hospitality industry,” Hecquet said.
