A teenager died in a multi-vehicle collision involving a school bus one mile west of Springfield on Dec. 7, according to crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

A Ford Explorer driven by a Springfield man pulled into the path of an oncoming Willard School District bus at around 4 p.m. The bus then struck an oncoming 1995 Chevrolet S10, driven by a female juvenile, 17, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.

The juvenile was identified as Willard High School senior Callista Fisher, according to an emailed statement from the school district.

“It is with deep sadness that we write to inform you of the death of Willard High School senior, Callista Fisher,” said Heather Michael, director of communications and public relations at Willard Public Schools. “We extend our heartfelt sympathy to her friends and family, and ask that you please keep her friends and family in your thoughts and prayers.”

The crash happened on Missouri Highway 266, near a Dollar General store near State Route B, according to the Highway Patrol.

The school bus driver, Katherine Lopez of Willard, 52, had minor injuries following the crash, according to the Highway Patrol report. The driver of the Ford Explorer, Springfield's Harold Budnovich, 68, had serious injuries.

This marks the State Highway Patrol Troop D's 138th fatality in 2023, according to the report.

At Willard High School, “students will be read a statement informing them of Callista’s passing and to let them know of the resources available to help them grieve,” Michael said in the emailed statement.

“Our crisis team of counselors will be on-site at WHS tomorrow and as long as needed to help students and employees process this great loss,” Michael said.
