A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting early Sunday morning in Springfield.

Josue Fernando Alvarado Valenzuela, 27, of Mexico, was arrested July 14, and charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action, according to a press release from the Springfield Police Department. Court records were unavailable for viewing Sunday evening.

Police officers responded at 1:09 a.m. Sunday morning to a business parking lot in the 2600 block of South Campbell Ave., where they found Jesus Lopez Pacheco, 28, of Mexico, with multiple gunshot wounds. They also found Valenzuela leaning inside a vehicle on the parking lot, with multiple injuries that were not threatening to his life.

Pacheco was declared dead on the scene, and Valenzuela was transported to a Springfield hospital for treatment, according to the statement from police. The death marked Springfield's eighth homicide for 2024.

The investigation into the shooting continues. Police ask for anyone with additional information to contact 417-864-1810, an anonymous tip line at 417-869-8477 or p3tips.com
