A man is in Greene County Jail after he was arrested for allegedly attempting to take a child from a Walmart Neighborhood Market store in central Springfield.

According to a Springfield Police Department spokesperson, officers responded to the report of an attempted abduction at the Walmart at 444 W. Grand St., at 4:21 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12. Nelson Vrana, 58, was accused of attempting to take a child.

The child was quickly separated from Vrana, who reportedly left the store premises. Police officers later located Vrana and arrested him.

Vrana was booked into the Greene County Jail on suspicion of child kidnapping. The child is safe.

According to online court records, formal charges have not yet been filed.

UPDATE: A charge of attempted child kidnapping has been filed against Nelson Vrana.
