A man living in Battlefield, but with few ties to the area, has been charged with rape in the first degree, sodomy, and molestation of a child between the ages of 4 and 17.
Patrick Shane Sparkman, 40, is being held in the Greene County Jail. His bond is $100,000.
He was arrested March 29. The alleged rape occurred Dec. 31 in Battlefield. The alleged crime was investigated by Battlefield police.
The reported victim, whose name and age are redacted in court documents, was in her bedroom, according to the probable cause statement. Sparkman was in the house.
According to that statement, Sparkman “claimed he had no memory of the event ever happening. He stated he has been drinking heavily during the day which amounted to what he described was a ‘handle' of alcohol.”
A handle of liquor is a 1.75 liter bottle of liquor; it has thirty-nine 1.5-ounce shots in it.
The reported victim told police the assault lasted about two hours and that her phone was on the whole time because she had been communicating with a friend via a video phone app.
The reported victim told police her friend on the other end of the line did not see or hear anything during the assault.
She told him ‘No' several times; he choked her
She also told police she told Sparkman “no” several times and that Sparkman at one point choked her.
“She (the reported victim) said Patrick was consuming alcohol out of of the large bottle he had purchased and smelled strongly of alcohol during the assault and told her to not mention this happened to anyone.”
According to police, she said she was bruised and experiencing pain.
“She is worried about being around men in her life other than those in her own family.”
The probable cause statement says the investigating officer contacted the Stillwater, Oklahoma, police department about a “past rape charge” against Sparkman and obtained information that it involved a 10-year-old victim.
Sparkman is from Oklahoma and has no ties to Battlefield, according to court documents.
He left the house after the alleged rape and was located at the Braum's at 2617 W. Republic Road in Springfield.
The reported victim went to Cox South Hospital where she gave a written statement to police. Sparkman's next court date is April 3.
