A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle Saturday night near Mercy hospital and died at the scene.

According to Springfield police, The driver fled the scene but was later arrested.

Officers with the Springfield Police Department responded at 9:51 p.m. to an accident near the intersection of Fremont Avenue and Lindberg Street, just east of the hospital.

Sandra Brown, 59, from Springfield, was walking eastbound across the road when she was struck by a yellow 1994 Honda motorcycle traveling southbound on Fremont Avenue at Lindberg Street, a Springfield Police Department release said.

Brown was pronounced dead on scene, and her family has been notified.

Rodney Shires, 56, from Springfield, was identified as the driver of the motorcycle, the release said. Police officers found Shires at his residence and arrested him. After being treated at the hospital for minor injuries, Shires was booked into the Greene County Jail.

According to the Greene County Sheriff's Office website, Shires is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
