A Springfield man died Friday night after the motorcycle he was driving swerved and was struck by another vehicle.

According to a press release, Springfield police officers responded to a motor vehicle crash at Battlefield Street and Kimbrough Avenue around 9 p.m. Friday.

Benjamin Turner, 23, was driving a black 1998 Triumph Sprint motorcycle westbound on Battlefield Road from National Avenue when a white Toyota Tundra pulled eastbound onto Battlefield from a Kum & Go station.

Turner’s motorcycle reportedly swerved to the left to avoid hitting the Tundra and hit the concrete median, the release said.

Turner and his motorcycle then hit an eastbound blue Toyota 4Runner driven by Kiteria Smith, 28, from Kissee Mills.

Turner was transported to a Springfield hospital where he died, the release said.

Turner was wearing a motorcycle helmet at the time of the crash. Turner’s family has been notified. Anyone with any information about the crash is encouraged to contact the Springfield Police Department.

The circumstances of this crash are under investigation, according to the Springfield Police Department.

This is Springfield’s 14th fatal motor vehicle crash in 2023.
