Springfield police are investigating a murder-suicide in which the murder victim and another man were attacked with a hammer by a 35-year-old man who police say took his own life shortly after the attack.
Police were called to Cox North Hospital at 1:16 p.m. on Nov. 1 on a report of two men with injuries from an assault, according to a news release.
After speaking with a victim at the hospital, police responded to 4525 W. Chestnut Expressway, a business address that houses both Alli's Family Restaurant and a used car dealership/repair shop. Springfield Police confirmed the incident took place in a camper/trailer sitting on the northwest corner of the Alli's Family Restaurant property.
One of the victims, Phillip N. Campbell, was a 53-year-old employee of Alli's and was living in the camper, an SPD spokesperson said Thursday morning. He sustained life-threatening injuries during the attack. Campbell, from Springfield, was transported to another local hospital for treatment, but died Wednesday. Police have notified his family.
Another man sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the attack. He was treated and released from the hospital.
According to the release, officers found the crime scene and located a man who had taken his own life outside of it.
Police say Vincent Odom, 35, attacked Campbell and the other man with a hammer inside a building at the address, and then walked outside and hanged himself.
Campbell’s death is the 15th homicide in Springfield this year. Police continue to investigate the fatal attack, and are asking anyone with information to call the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or provide an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).
