Springfield police are asking people to be on the lookout for a car that matches the description of a vehicle that reportedly struck a pedestrian after she was struck by a motorcyclist.
Investigators on May 3 sought help identifying two people who they believe were in the car when the fatal collisions on Fremont Avenue occurred. According to a later Springfield Police Department release, tipsters identified the suspects. The police are not making their identities public as of Wednesday afternoon.
Sandra Brown, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene after she was reportedly hit by two vehicles. Brown was walking east across Fremont Avenue at the Lindberg Street intersection just before 10 p.m. on April 29.
Investigation led to discovery of second vehicle involved in woman's death
The initial police report stated Brown was killed after she was struck by a yellow 1994 Honda motorcycle traveling southbound on Fremont. The motorcyclist, Rodney Shires, 56, fled the scene, police say, and he was arrested later at his home. Shires is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
Following more investigation of the fatal collision, police determined that another vehicle hit Brown as well. On May 3, police asked the public to look out for a red Chevrolet Cobalt from the 2005-2010 period. Police also released a surveillance image of the suspected driver and passenger in the Cobalt at the time Brown was hit. The footage shows the two walking through an entrance at nearby Mercy Hospital. Cris Swaters, Springfield Police Department spokeswoman, said the image was captured on the day of Brown’s death.
