A Republic man died and five people were seriously injured following a three-vehicle crash about a mile west of Springfield Sunday morning.

The crash occurred at 8:45 a.m. on U.S. 60 at S. Farm Road 135.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol report, a 2011 GMC Canyon driven by David Cantrell, 38, of Springfield was westbound when it traveled off the roadway, crossed the median and struck a concrete bridge.

Cantrell’s vehicle then entered the eastbound lanes and collided with a 2021 Ford F150 driven by Jose A. Martinez, 59, of Billings. Martinez’s vehicle spun and struck a 2002 GMC Sonoma driven by Donald R. Underwood, 72, of Republic.

Underwood was pronounced dead at the scene.

The five people in Cantrell’s vehicle, including David Cantrell, 37-year-old Shawna Cantrell, and three juveniles ages 14, 10, and 7, were all transported to Mercy Hospital with serious injuries.

Martinez was also transported to Mercy with minor injuries.

Underwood was Troop D’s third fatality in 2023.
