The Springfield Police Department received its ninth consecutive international accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).
“Another successful accreditation review means we continue to provide Springfield with excellent service while following established industry best practices,” Police Chief Paul Williams said in a press release.
In addition, SPD Accreditation Manager Brandy Osborn completed all aspects of training required by CALEA and has earned the title of Certified Accreditation Manager.
The accreditation follows a multi-year self-assessment phase and a site-based assessment of the Springfield Police Department's community engagement, policy, procedures, equipment and facilities by CALEA assessors. Williams appeared before the commission on Nov. 11, 2023.
That commission voted unanimously to approve the department’s reaccreditation application. The Springfield Police Department is recognized as a meritorious agency for having achieved more than 15 consecutive years of accreditation. The police department is required to apply for reaccreditation and submit to a similar review every four years in order to maintain accredited status.
“SPD is committed to this voluntary accreditation process and to CALEA, the only international organization available that provides such certification and oversight into the standards, policies, procedures and operations of police agencies,” the press release said.
Part of the accreditation process is the opportunity for public feedback. An online portal is available year-round for public comment. Persons wishing to provide feedback directly to the Springfield Police Department can find forms on the SPD website.
