Springfield police responded to a report of a person shot at 10:45 p.m. on July 1, at 214 W. Madison St. in central Springfield.

Keontae Tureaud, 19, of Springfield, was found with gunshot wounds and transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the Springfield Police Department. On July 3, Tureaud died from his injuries.

Nikolai Janes, 20, of Springfield, having been on the scene, was identified as a suspect of the shooting, according to police. On July 2, Janes was was arrested and booked into the Greene County Jail, and has since been charged with 2nd Degree Assault and Armed Criminal Action, according to police. Janes is being held with a $100,000 bond.

Springfield's 10th homicide investigation of 2023 was presented to the Greene County Prosecutor's Office, which cautions that the charges contained in the felony complaint are merely allegations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
