The number of COVID-19 cases in Springfield and Greene County has more than tripled in the last month, according to health department data.
In the week of Aug. 6-12, there were 57 positive cases reported by health care providers to the Springfield-Greene County Health Department.
Last week, 174 positive cases were reported.
Even with the surge, some Springfieldians may want to hold off before getting a vaccine booster.
The latest COVID-19 boosters were approved by the Food and Drug Administration on Monday, according to the New York Times.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to follow up on Tuesday with an advisory meeting to discuss who should get the new shots, manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. After a final decision by the CDC’s director, millions of doses will be shipped to pharmacies, clinics and health systems nationwide within days.
A spokesperson with the Springfield-Greene County Health Department said it has not yet received information about when updated vaccines will be available in Greene County. The department anticipates getting that information from the Centers for Disease Control and Department of Health and Senior Services soon.
