York Elementary, of Springfield Public Schools, was vandalized with symbols of hate speech over the weekend.
Located at 2100 W. Nichols St., the under-construction elementary school in Springfield’s northwest was damaged with spray-painted hate speech, including an anti-Semitic symbol.
“SPS is working closely with the Springfield Police Department on its investigation of vandalism, including hate speech, at the York Elementary construction site,” Stephen Hall, the chief communications director of SPS, said in a statement to the Daily Citizen.
SPS does not intend to let this crime delay the construction of York Elementary.
“While this unfortunate situation is deeply disappointing, it will not deter us from opening the new building on time,” the statement read. “It is our hope that those responsible will be identified and held accountable for their actions. In the meantime, the district will be forced to incur the additional cost of damages related to this senseless act.”
