On the morning of Jan. 20, at 1 a.m., three people were killed and six others injured in a head-on collision on James River Freeway near West Bypass, according to police.
Steven Jordan, 65, who police suspect to have been intoxicated, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane in a 1991 Dodge Ram truck. Near West Bypass, the truck collided head-on with a 2021 Ford Expedition that had eight adults, all from Texas.
“Intoxication is believed to be a factor in this crash,” the Springfield Police Department said in a news release. “The investigation is ongoing as to the circumstances involved in the crash. Anyone with any information about the crash is encouraged to contact the Springfield Police Department.”
Of the Expedition occupants, three were killed, including Sharon Farmer, 69, Ukena Farmer, 45, and Stephen Figgins, 61. Three others were transported to the hospital and are currently in critical, but stable, condition. The remaining two occupants sustained minor injuries.
The families of the deceased have been notified, according to SPD.
Jordan, a Republic resident, has also been hospitalized with injuries.
This marks the third fatal crash in Springfield in 2023, bringing the total number of fatalities to five.
