A petition drive intended to require a citywide vote on Springfield’s city flag has failed because not enough signatures were collected.
The City Council voted 7-2 on Jan. 10 to adopt a new city flag.
The old flag was first used in 1938. The new flag was initially proposed in 2017 by a group of residents called the Springfield Identity Project. Citizen Columnist Steve Pokin wrote about the flag controversy on Jan. 4.
