A second man suspected in the April 17 shooting death in west Springfield of Lavelle C. Rose III was arrested Friday, June 23, and booked into the Greene County Jail Sunday.

Xavier Nashawn Moore, 21, of Springfield, has been charged with first-degree murder. Moore is being held without bond.

Rose, 18, of East St. Louis, Illinois, was shot and killed while riding as a passenger in a vehicle near West Calhoun Street and North Forest Avenue the evening of April 17.

Police responded to a report of someone shot at 6:51 p.m. and found Rose and the woman who was driving the vehicle had both been shot multiple times.

The woman was hospitalized with what police say are non-life-threatening injuries. Rose was pronounced dead at the scene.

Springfield police arrested Justin L. Bartels, a 21-year-old St. Louis man in connection with the shooting death. On April 21, Bartels was released on bond, which was $250,000, according to online court records.

Bartels is charged with second-degree murder, as well as two counts of armed criminal action and one count of first-degree assault.

In addition to the murder charge, Moore is charged with three counts of armed criminal action, assault in the first degree and discharging a firearm from a vehicle.
