Text from our SGF Weekend email newsletter, written by Managing Editor Brittany Meiling

I'm kicking off this weekend with a story that made me smile. It's a piece about the famed Michael Spyres, a Mansfield native who grew into an international opera star. He's hosting a fancy dinner event at the Gillioz Theatre, hoping to bring a little of France to the Ozarks. But my favorite bit in this article was when Spyres compared the Ozarks to France — and found some shared attributes. Check out the story written by Mary Ellen Chiles.

Then don't miss some of our most-read stories of the week, including this piece from Rance Burger about plans to convert 18 fields from grass to turf at the Cooper Sports Complex. This is the first step in a project that some hope will make Springfield a destination for soccer.

Those soccer fields (and fans) are likely going through some weather whiplash right now. The frost Tuesday night killed the last of my summer herb garden, so I'm feeling a little salty about the 80-degree forecast for this weekend. I could have had garden-grown pesto for at least another week!

Enjoy your (probably) last warm weekend, readers. Trek through the MSU campus if you want to check out the new John Goodman Amphitheatre (open to the public on Sunday), or head to the final Gigs in the Garden concert.
