Today’s the day for the Cherry Blossom Kite and Piñata Festival at the Springfield Botanical Gardens, part of Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park. Before you turn onto Scenic Avenue, find out more about this Sister Cities event, a cultural celebration of Springfield’s relations with Japan and Mexico, in this piece from Jeff Kessinger.

I learned firsthand about the diverse wonders Nathanael Greene Park offers when I took some out-of-town relatives there to see it for the first time. We truly have a treasure. As Sony Hocklander explores in our popular neighborhood guide series, there’s a whole lot more happening around the park, from trails to antiques to a good cup of coffee.

Spring is springing, sort of. We’ve got some thunderstorms and slightly warmer temperatures, and some green grass to go outside and walk on. It’s the time of year where the little foodie in me starts thinking about salads with fresh produce and maybe something hot off the grill. Business reporter Jack McGee takes us to Fassnight Creek Farm, where you can go out for a Sunday stroll, see the vegetables sprouting and onions are a big part of the Bigbee family business.

The St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals both took losses on MLB Opening Day, but we’re holding out hope for our own Springfield Cardinals to beat the Wichita Wind Surge when the Texas League season starts April 6. The Baby Birds will run out of the dugout onto Hammons Field in what is now a municipality-owned stadium. In case you missed it, check out the details on the $16 million deal.

Have a great Saturday.
