SGF Weekend: Country, rock and a Walnut Street walk

After Friday’s rain, it’s nice and mild today. It’s a good day to take a walk down Walnut Street, hop in the car and head down to Nixa for Sucker Days, or see the Missouri State baseball Bears play a doubleheader with Indiana State at Hammons Field in their final home games of the season (12 p.m. first pitch).

Ozark Mountain Daredevils founding member Larry Lee is profiled in this piece from Dale McCurry, who does a great job exploring why writers can’t ever, ever give up the craft. Lee could have rested on his laurels and cashed his checks after “Jackie Blue,” but he’s still writing and playing new stuff 50 years later.

Speaking of legends in country and rock: Dolly Parton. A Springfield woman in the early stages of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s got to meet her hero in Dollywood earlier this month, with a little help from her friends at CoxHealth. Jackie Rehwald tracked down this feel-good story.

Looking for something to do inside this evening? The Plotline Student Film Showcase is a film festival that starts at 5 p.m. at Alamo Drafthouse. The average age for a participating filmmaker is just 13 years old, but be prepared to be wowed.
