Family members and classmates of a Glendale High School junior and basketball player are mourning his death.

Amare Witham died “unexpectedly” earlier this week, according to a message sent from the school to families.

Glendale High School has organized a team of crisis counselors, who will meet with students and staff from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 3.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends, teachers, and all those who knew and loved him,” wrote Principal Josh Groves in the email. “This is a loss for our entire school community so we want you to know that we are here for all of our students and staff as they process this news.”

Witham was considered a rising basketball talent respected for his scoring, according to the Springfield News-Leader. He had entertained recruitment offers from NCAA Division I basketball teams.
