When students return from summer break to Greenwood Laboratory School, they should be able to enjoy a newly renovated cafeteria.

The Missouri State University Board of Governors last approved a bid of $187,213.45 from Kenmar Construction, Inc. to renovate the space, including the removal of a crow’s nest, and the additions of new flooring, new lights, sound panels, a kitchenette and a storage room.

The project’s total cost is $236,000, with a contingency fund of $43,000, project administration costs of $1,286.55 and consulting fees of $4,500 rounding out the project’s costs.

Ron Snodgrass, director of Greenwood, said the work should be completed before the start of school on Aug. 21.

“We’re not expanding anything, it’s just a renovation,” Snodgrass said. “We are talking about new paint, new floors, new lighting and a few other touch-up things.”

Originally the project was to include new furniture for the space. Snodgrass said in order to keep the project below a $250,000 threshold set by the university for bidding policies, the cost of that furniture was withdrawn from the project; donors will be asked to pick up that cost in the future.

Greenwood, a K-12 school, is part of the university’s college of education, and serves as a laboratory for teaching students studying pedagogy and best practices in the field. Admission is based on an application process and requires tuition costs.

Snodgrass said administrators hope attendance for the upcoming school year is to reach 430 students.
