A handgun was found in a student's backpack and confiscated at Reed Academy April 4, according to a statement from the Springfield middle school.

A staff member became suspicious of a student's backpack and alerted administration and school police, according to the release. The bag was immediately searched and a loaded handgun was found and confiscated. All students were safe following the incident.

The student is in police custody and will be processed by law enforcement, according to the release. The Springfield middle school, located at 2000 N. Lyon Ave., will also follow appropriate disciplinary procedures with the student.

The student was cooperative and Reed Academy said in the statement that it did not believe the student intended to use the weapon at school.

“We consider any weapon at school a serious concern and I wanted you to know the actions that were taken to respond to this incident,” a school representative said in the statement.
