Don’t let his last name fool you.

Joe Dull appreciates an interesting and exciting movie — a passion that will suit him well as the executive director of the Moxie Cinema in downtown Springfield.

A longtime film professor and nonprofit professional, Dull will take the reins starting May 1.

“Simply put, I love movies. Much of my life I’ve made movies, watched movies, and helped others to learn about them,” Dull said in a news release. “Getting the chance to lead The Moxie is a dream.”

Dull is replacing Mike Stevens, who served as Moxie’s executive director since 2010 and announced plans to step down in January. The Moxie Cinema, located at 305 S. Campbell Ave., Ste. 101.

According to the release, Dull is an award-winning filmmaker, educator, and social media director. He recently transplanted to Springfield from Southern California and has worked with several southwest Missouri nonprofits to craft video documentaries and help tell their stories.

“We had a very strong pool of candidates, but Joe really stood out,” Stephanie Stenger, President of the Moxie Cinema Board of Directors, said in the release. “We were looking for an energetic, adaptable movie lover to take the Moxie into the future and we are thrilled that Joe fits that description perfectly.”

Stevens has been a part of the hiring process and is working to make sure the Moxie's leadership transition goes smoothly.

“I am confident the Moxie will be in good hands,” Stevens said in the release.

The Moxie also promoted longtime staffer Shay Rainey to the newly created role of theater manager. Rainey has worked at the Moxie since 2013.

“I am excited to step into this role as the Moxie holds a special place in my heart,” Rainey said in the release. “We have so much going for us right now: Joe’s energy and passion; a fantastic staff; and, of course, a huge community of film lovers that support us.”
