Springfield Tenants Unite wants to build a citywide tenant union. The organization kicks off that effort with “Year of the Tenant” on March 23. The artists’ showcase is from 12-4 p.m. at Big Momma’s Coffee and Espresso Bar on Historic Commercial Street.
“Year of the Tenant” features musicians, poets and visual artists. Their performances and exhibits will “focus on housing conditions and political education,” a press release from Springfield Tenants Unite reads. Featured artists include:
- A Poet Named Shay (poetry)
- BLÜME (music)
- Petyr “Peewee” Cruikshanks (poetry)
- Correna Jane (music)
- Rex Ybañez (poetry)
- Mar the Ghost (poetry)
Speakers at the event will address the importance of housing for the Springfield community. Tenant leaders and organizers will be on hand to share their stories as well as details on how to get involved. Attendees will be able to sign up for a tenant union membership during “Year of the Tenant.”
“Through this event, Springfield Tenants Unite aims to build a citywide union, including a network of neighborhood and building unions, to wield people power and win a Springfield where everyone has a safe, accessible, truly and permanently affordable home,” the press release reads.
Admission to “Year of the Tenant” is free and food will be provided. There is a suggested donation of $10 to cover costs.
