T.D. Scott is very honest with his artist’s statement for his new exhibition, entitled “...just art.”
“My new collection is about artistic styling. I have no point to make,” Scott said in a press release.
You can see this exhibition about artistic styling at Obelisk Home, 214 W. Phelps, Suite 101, during October’s First Friday Art Walk. It’s scheduled for Oct. 7, 6 to 10 p.m. First Friday Art Walk is a monthly effort in which galleries and businesses line up arts-related events across Downtown Springfield. The public is encouraged to walk downtown and pop into many of the galleries in what organizers call a “self-guided tour.”
Painting with hot wax
Scott is an encaustic artist, meaning he paints with hot wax. He studied watercolor primarily, then began to dive into hot glass fusing. That, eventually, led Scott to encaustic wax painting. He has installations and commissions across the country, including with the San Diego Museum of Art, the Frank Lloyd Wright Society, Tiffany & Co., and the Los Angeles Opera.

“My focus this time was simple,” Scott said. “Alone in my studio, I work and pursue and discover the encaustic medium. Its organic nature continues to excite me. The way one color bleeds into the next, or a previous layer rises to the surface and shines through is captivating.
“This collection is a bit more colorful. I truly enjoyed creating these pieces because the process provided relief to me, a much-needed distraction from this chaotic world. I have so many personal opinions and fatigue with our social climate. I chose not to show my feelings here. These works have no agenda and no message ... they are just art.”
Watercolor art shines at Formed
Formed: An Artist Collective, 210 E. Walnut St., meanwhile, will feature the work of Rick Atwell. Atwell began his career at age 17 as a dancer, singer, actor and, later, choreographer and director. He’s worked on Broadway, off-Broadway, in television, film, videos and commercials. Atwell is also an avid sailor and his love for watercolor began while sailing the New England coast. He started his art career in New York but now lives in Springfield.
First Friday Art Walk welcomes a new venue this month. Best of Luck Beer hall, at 313-B S. Jefferson Ave., will feature art from Chad Woody and offer an Art Walk special: $1 off every pint of Oktoberfest beer if you show your Art Walk Newsletter or request the discount.
Plenty of entertainment to be found
There will be plenty of live entertainment to enjoy along with the art on this month’s walk. The Ward Downtown YMCA, 417 S. Jefferson Ave., features The Fools Gladly from 6 to 8 p.m. The professional clown troupe, based out of Springfield, specializes in creative costuming, juggling, tiny biking, hula hooping and more.
The Springfield Regional Arts Council, meanwhile, is hosting the show “Pure Enjoyment” at the Creamery Arts Center, 411 N. Sherman Parkway, and featuring a quartet from the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. And head over to The Downtown Church, 413 E. Walnut St., from 6 to 8 p.m. for popcorn, lemonade, kids' activities and a performance from Springfield Little Theatre’s YES Troupe.
