Ahead of Memorial Day, a temporary exhibit will debut in downtown Springfield, showcasing veterans and recounting history through a display of military uniforms and stories from around the world.
From May 24 to July 23, the History Museum on the Square, located at 154 Park Central Square, will display the exhibit “Beyond the Camouflage: Global Uniforms | Local Stories.”
Beyond the Camouflage will tell stories about Springfield's veterans and veteran organizations, and display uniforms from every continent.
“We are thrilled to offer this unique opportunity for people in our community to highlight the stories of their grandfathers, mothers, spouses, friends, or local heroes who served our country,” said Sean FitzGibbons, the museum's executive director, in a press release. “We hope that visitors leave with a greater appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who served and a deeper understanding of the impact of service on both a global and local scale.”
If you want to honor a specific veteran or active duty service member, you can pay $100 to display an image and caption for the entirety of the exhibit.
“This exhibition is meant to not only serve military members and their families through direct representation and storytelling, but to do so with the utmost respect to the sacrifices they made to ensure our freedom,” a description of the event reads. “The History Museum wants to connect the rich history of military service from Southwest Missouri to our contemporary community.”
