Dickerson Park Zoo announced over the weekend that their capybaras, Turkey and Sequoia, are the proud parents of four capybara pups. This is the first litter for both mom Turkey and dad Sequoia.
The litter was born on Oct. 19, but stayed inside with mom for the first few weeks, said zoo spokesperson Joey Powell.
Powell said Monday morning that she had just stopped by the capybara enclosure at the zoo and the pups were outside following their mom around.
The zookeeps do not yet know the sex of the babies. They will have their first exam on Thursday, Powell said.
Sequoia came to Dickerson Park Zoo in 2020. Turkey arrived earlier this year. They are kept in what used to be the hippo enclosure.
Capybaras are the largest living rodent and are native to South America. The semi-aquatic animals are also called water hogs.
Dickerson Park Zoo is located at 1404 W. Norton Rd. It is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, but will switch to fall/winter hours 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Tuesday.
