Here are my top picks for things to do this weekend. Not into these events? A longer list of things to do is available on the Daily Citizen’s Event Calendar.

Saturday, May 7

Mother Lovin’ Jazz

Mother’s Brewing Company is at it again, hosting three rounds of its signature party of the year — Mother’s Day Fest.

In an effort to support the creative process in all capacities, the Mother’s team will have different music genres each weekend that they say complement and build upon one another. This weekend features Jazz and Blues musicians The Paper Moons, 83 Skidoo and, a Springfield favorite, Shaun Munday. You are encouraged to bring water bottles to reduce waste. Feel free to bring kiddos, but leave the pups at home for this event.

This outdoor beer’a’thon is from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. at your local Mother’s Brewing Company on Saturday.

Gilded Age on Stage

The gilded age is brought to the stage thanks to the Springfield Contemporary Theatre’s performance of “Sense and Sensibility.”

According to organizers, this is a playful new adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel. It follows the lives of the Dashwood sisters after their father’s sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable, examining our reactions to societal pressures. While this may be based in late 1800s England, the themes resonate with many of the issues we still face to this day.

“Sense and Sensibility” is being held at the Springfield Art Museum this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Sunday, May 8

Performers at the Park

This Mother’s Day, treat your mom with sunshine and the musical stylings all-male jazz band at Gigs in the Garden.

Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy a variety of local performance groups in an extraordinarily beautiful setting known as the Peace Through People Pavilion at the park. The band MOJO Lite is made up of a smaller group of students in the Missouri State Jazz Orchestra. Organizers do advise you to bring your own lawn chairs or blankets. This event is friendly for both kids and dogs.

Gigs in the Garden is a free event at Close Memorial Park, beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
