Nearly fifty years ago, the American Psychological Association publicly addressed the issue of corporal punishment in schools.
Fifty years ago...
“Therefore, be it resolved that the American Psychological Association opposes the use of corporal punishment in schools, juvenile facilities, child care nurseries, and all other institutions, public or private, where children are cared for or educated (Conger, 1975).”
There is a preponderance of evidence apparent in even a cursory review of the available research over the last 50 years describing the destructive impact of corporal punishment on children.
I suggest any SPS board member realistically recommending such an approach as district policy first familiarize themselves with the available research, as is expected of our elected public officials.
